Before KEN™ Treatment
At AIWO, before KEN™ treatment, a free consultation is given to the obese patients who are wanting to reduce their weight. Once the patient has decided to undergo the KEN™ therapy, patients must fill out a questionnaire that gathers their past history in relation to obesity and in relation to major diseases.
Patients of following 3 categories are not subjected to take KEN™ treatment.
- Patients who cannot take a normal amount of protein.
- Patients allergic to milk proteins.
- Patients less than 14 years old.
After filling the questionnaire, all patients undergo a Bio impedance study revealing their body composition. This study is done for proper assessment of ideal weight and to assess the fat mass and body composition of patients so that they can then be examined at the end of the cycle, to assess the amount of fat that was lost.
During KEN™ Treatment
Once, the body composition analysis is done, patients are ready to undergo KEN™ therapy. There is no need for any extra preparation and the patient may have taken food or fluids before the introduction of Nasogastric tube. The patient is seated and will be asked to sip water with a straw. A fine Nasogastric tube is inserted into the nose and passed into the stomach of the patient to allow continuous feeding of the protein liquid. This procedure takes few seconds and is not painful. During the first 10 minutes, the patient might experience some uncomfortable sensation in the nose and throat due to the foreign object which was introduced. Gradually the uncomfortable sensation disappears as the body gets used to the presence of the tube. This experience is like wearing spectacles or dentures for the first time.
There is no sensation of the liquid passing down the throat because this superfine tube is designed for feeding children. The liquid formula is pushed with the help of electric pump which works day and night to deliver two litres of special formula over a period of 24 hours. The pump is very light and extremely quiet. Each patient is supplied with the nutrient solution and an enteral pump after having been shown how to operate it by themselves.
The patient need not stay in hospital during the treatment and can continue his routine activities by following KEN™@Home.

From then on, and for 10 days, the patient should not take anything but water, black tea, chamomile tea or coffee without sugar or sweeteners, otherwise the Ketones are reduced and the feeling of hunger might appear. This is something which should carefully be avoided.
This process has no risk of injury or dangerous complications.
Patients are able to perform their daily activities without any problem and will go through the whole period without the need of any additional food. KEN™ therapy has no side effects, no risk of injuries or any dangerous complications.
During Treatment Cycle each patient must record the following data every day:
a) Weight.
b) Ketonuria (daily measurement of the concentration of Ketones in the urine).
c) Feeling of hunger (on a scale from 0 to 10).
d) Bowel movements.
Each patient is given a phone number to call in case:
- Feeling hungry
- Weight does not drop as planned
- Feeling any unusual discomfort
Patients, during the cycle, undergo a therapy that reduces gastric secretion, which tends to be overly stimulated by the infusion of proteins.
They must also perform a routine bowel washes to remove residual food in the intestines and to prevent clogging of the colon.
The KEN™ results in an increased sensitivity to the anti-hypertensive and anti-diabetic drugs. This MUST BE SUSPENDED FOR THE DURATION OF THE KEN™ and must be taken again immediately upon the resumption of a normal diet. However, it’s essential to control blood sugar and blood pressure levels: If blood sugar or pressure exceeds the maximum value of 160 the centre must be contacted immediately.
All other medications should be taken as normal and in the usual recommended doses.
At the end of the cycle
Patients should return to the Centre to:
- Return the pump.
- Fill in a questionnaire at the end of cycle.
- Monitor Body Composition and assess the treatment.
- Remove the tube.
- Receive a maintenance diet for 10 days.
